How to (mentally) leave work at work when you work from home as an Entrepreneur

When working from home, it can be a challenge to separate time from home-life and work-life. This is even more challenging when you are an entrepreneur. To be fully present with family and to be fully present with work, can take up most of your time. What about personal time? This is an added piece to the equation. Let’s explore helpful tips that can help you balance your work time.

    [1] set enough sleep

This might sound strange, yet without the proper amount of sleep, you won’t be able to adjust properly to what the upcoming hours may hold.

[2] have a meal plan available

This is vital to know what meals you are eating. This also includes what you need to gather for these meals, when they will be prepped [daily or weekly], when they will be cooked [daily or weekly], who is in charge of these aspects, who is in charge of cleaning up.

[3] have a simple cleaning rhythm

Making sure that your home/work space stays tidy is vital. When your area is cluttered, so is your mind. What are tasks that can be completed daily, weekly, biweekly, monthly, quarterly, etc. who is in charge of these aspects, <this includes home, vehicle, yard maintenance>

    [4] have a financial plan

who is in charge of these aspects, when is this done. Does this involve a meetings with other people? Is this for home or work? <this includes pets and farm animals>

[5] have a collection of simple rhythms for each day of the week and each area of life.

    {discussed more in detail in course}

[6] have a hard start and stop time for work, especially if an entrepreneur

This can be one hard start and stop times or multiple time sessions where you work and then break for home life for a time period and then start work again.

    [7] have a decompression session

Whether you do this alone or with a person, go over your day and release it to the One who understands. This will help your body realize that work is done.

[8] plan for home and non-work activities

What are you doing after work? Are you enjoying time off? Are you running errands? Plan for those activities so that time doesn’t slip away from you.

    The Silent Loop

    Can you hear that?

    Screaming intently with increasing volume

    Can you hear the voices?

The wind shifts and muffles the voices

Were those echoes of the past?

The reminisce of a whisper lingers

    Did you hear that?

    A _____, you say?

One day as a mom of little sprouts, I decided to explore beyond the local rural highway and venture onto interstate towards the larger cities. The adventure that awaited ahead was completely unexpected. I ended up with a cartful of children inside a buggy in the largest store in the city.

Slowly and peacefully walking through the store while it was practically empty, we got to explore and enjoy conversations. Turning the corner, there was a pointy hat bouncing that could be seen through the shorter shoe racks.

My first thought was “awe how cute.” My next thought was “where are the parents?” So I turned the cart into the shoe isle to see if the child was lost. Then the peacefulness turn into giggling chaos.

The laughter from the buggy quieted down. From a far, there was a glimpse of a pointy hat peaking around the shelf. There was stillness in the air.

Slowly the gnome came towards us. As tall as my nine-month-old, hat and all, stretched out a hand and handed me a card that read:

Hi there. I am Gregory, the gnome. It is a pleasure to meet you. I make sure that everything is stocked. Normally the store is empty at this hour. I am sorry for screaming.

It was a sweet note. Soon an employee found us. She explained that the gnomes avoid stores in heavily populated areas as being photographed terrifies them. This gnome is the only one within a thousand mile radius.

While we spoke, the children began to sputter out questions. The employee was patient and answered all of their questions.

It was a wonderful learning experience for all of us. It has been many decades since we have visited the store with the gnome. We often wonder if the gnome is still there…
